Molecular phylogenetic analysis of basal lineages of Bilateria

We want to resolve the phylogenetic relationships of basal lineages of the Bilateria to contribute to a better understanding of the groundplan and the early evolution of the Bilateria. In the first phase of the priority program we will focus on the relationships of the Bryozoa, Brachiopoda and Phoronida, which have formerly been included in the Lophophorata (or Tentaculata), and on the Chaetognatha. We propose EST projects with representatives of the Bryozoa, Brachiopoda and Phoronida to compile a large set of protein-coding genes. Supplementary to the sequences which will be gathered in the EST projects we will focus on about ten protein-coding nuclear genes from the mentioned species as well as from additional representatives of the Bryozoa, the Brachiopoda and the Chaetognatha. With this data set and the ortholog sequences of other bilaterians which are partly already available from databases and which will be supplemented from other taxa in other projects of the priority program a robust resolution of the phylogenetic relationships of the Bryozoa, Brachiopoda, Phoronida and Chaetognatha shall be elaborated. The knowledge of the basal lineages will also contribute to a better resolution in the phylogenetic analyses of the more terminal clades of the Bilateria of which largely the same set of sequences will be studied in other projects of the priority program.
